Tribute to “Daddy Victor”
By Lorna Barrow, Mother of Grandson Jamal

When the time came for me to meet “Daddy Victor” I was trembling. I had heard so much about him and I simply did not know what to expect. When I saw him, he said to me “That is your man?” (indicating his son Andi) and I hesitantly replied “Yyyees.” Then he said with his trademark smile “you want a man like me, hear!”

Over the years, I had many reasons to remember those words because “Daddy” was the consummate Grandfather, not only to his own grandson, Jamal but to my other son Alex, as well. There was never a time that I called on him or Aunt Doreen to assist me with either one or both of them that they did not help.

I especially remember how he used to insist that all his children and grandchildren come to Husbands on the slightest sign of bad weather, and I was never sure if it was for our safety or his security. I loved his warmth, his sense of humour and the way in which family was important to him.

Some people do not get to leave a legacy when they pass on but Daddy left one of love, laughter and humanity. My life is certainly richer for having known him and I am thankful that he chose to be my friend.
